Understanding Dog Pregnancy

Knowing when your dog is due to give birth and what to expect during pregnancy is essential for providing the best care. The average dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days (9 weeks), but it can range from 58 to 68 days.

Stages of Dog Pregnancy

  • Days 1-21: During this early stage, your dog may not show many signs of pregnancy. Hormonal changes occur, and fertilized eggs begin implanting in the uterus.
  • Days 22-35: By this stage, the pregnancy is confirmed. Your dog may begin to gain weight, and her nipples may become more prominent. You might notice changes in her behavior.
  • Days 36-45: The puppies continue developing, and your dog’s belly will become more noticeable. You may be able to feel the puppies moving inside her.
  • Days 46-58: During this stage, the puppies are almost fully formed. Your dog’s belly will be visibly larger. You should start preparing the whelping area for delivery.
  • Days 59-63: This is the final stage of pregnancy. Your dog may show signs of nesting behavior, and you should monitor her closely for signs of labor. The puppies are ready to be born!

Preparing for the Birth of Puppies

As your dog nears her due date, it's essential to prepare for her labor and delivery. Here are some tips:

  • Prepare a Whelping Box: Provide a clean, comfortable, and quiet place where your dog can give birth to her puppies.
  • Monitor Temperature: In the last 24 hours of pregnancy, your dog’s body temperature will drop slightly, signaling that labor is imminent.
  • Keep Supplies Handy: Have towels, clean scissors, and a heating pad available to help with the birth process.
  • Vet Assistance: If you notice signs of distress or if the labor is not progressing, contact your veterinarian for help.
